Raw Foods

I have this weird obsession with food documentaries. I watch them, freak out, run to the store, and buy all the healthy food I can find. And then, slowly, I return to my former eating habits. The cycle repeats when I watch another documentary, and I just watched one.

Theme: VEGETABLES 1/40s, f/3.5, ISO 400

What I have learned:

1. High Fructose corn syrup: BOO!

2. Raw Foods: Yay!

3. Organic Food: ? (debatable on how much healthier it is)

Eating raw foods can apparently cure all sorts of ailments, some even saying that it can cure cancer. The food is not magic. It's just what our bodies were made to eat. When the body digests food quickly and efficiently, it has more energy to heal itself. My latest documentary claimed that the body needs 51% raw food (fruit, veggies, nuts - not meat!) to heal properly, so that is my goal (lofty, I know).

I just tried a recipe this morning that I am rather excited about. Chad helped me and I was worried that he wouldn't eat it after he saw what was in it (dates are kind of creepy looking). Wrong! My kids ate it like it was CANDY!

Almond Snack Bars

1 cup chopped dates (buy them whole, remove seeds)

1 1/2 cup chopped almonds

2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

Combine ingredients in food processor until paste forms. Roll into 1" balls or form into bars by placing on parchment paper in a baking dish, then cutting into squares.

Recipe adapted from one found here (more variations available).

You are too good. Eating crap is just easier, I guess that is why I eat it, although I try to be good sometimes. Keep it up!

I am a hypocrite because I try to make my kids eat healthy stuff, but then eat junk when they are not looking. I will have to try this recipe though - I have actually never bought dates before.

I'm the same way Julie - I justify it by telling myself that I am doing them a favor!
